Unprecedented Support for Maintenance of Route verte

It is already over a year since Vélo Québec and several stakeholders tried to convince the government to reinstate the Route verte maintenance program. Their methods included press releases, open letters signed by business people and celebrities, submission of a financing proposal to the Ministère des Transports at a high-level meeting, awareness-raising of elected officials, as well as regional stands taken by mayors, RCMs and cycling network managers.
We watched, with great interest, as citizens rose in turn to denounce this situation by supporting the Save the Route verte petition launched by Équiterre. Not only was it signed by nearly 50,000 citizens strongly urging the government to take action, but it also sparked an initiative to raise the awareness of the ministers responsible for the regions of Saguenay–Lac St-Jean (as it happens, Premier Couillard), the Laurentians, Eastern Townships, Capitale nationale and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, as well as MNAs from all parties. This initiative culminated on October 26, when the mayors and cycling network managers of 13 Québec regions simultaneously submitted a copy of the petition to their local MNA or minister. The news spread like wildfire throughout Québec, generating considerable media and public attention.
We at Vélo Québec are very pleased to see how the maintenance of the Route verte has mobilized the population over the past year. This major initiative has made us realize the extent of public support for this unique project, which is the pride of Québec and the envy of foreign visitors. It is a sign that the Route verte has come of age - and that it means so much to so many of us.
I would like to thank Équiterre for its involvement, as well as the municipalities, RCMs and cycling network managers who joined forces to get the petition signed  in all regions - not to mention the thousands signatories of the document.
Let’s hope that the government will quickly find a solution to ensure the longevity of the Route verte.  Of course, Vélo Québec will continue to monitor the situation, but we definitely feel buoyed by your support.
Many thanks!
