In July, the Supreme Court rejected the request of 3 cyclists who contested the fact that cyclists guilty of an infraction of the Highway Safety Act are given demerit points on their driving license, even though the latter is not required for riding a bicycle. The judge deemed the request inadmissible. The debate is therefore not about the infraction itself, but rather the issue of rights. Vélo Québec has pressured the SAAQ repeatedly over the past 10 years to apply its regulations in a more realistic manner. We hope that the fight will continue. Only cyclists who receive an infraction can take legal action, but they will have to follow a different route than their predecessors. We will continue to keep you abreast of this situation.
