Working Toward a Bicycle Friendly Québec
Vélo Québec is launching a certification program for communities and organizations
Vélo Québec is launching the Mouvement vélosympathique
– a certification program for communities (municipalities, boroughs and MRC) and organizations (private and public). The program encourages the latter to make biking a real transportation and recreation option for everyone. It offers them tools, a support service and an assessment report that will serve as an action plan, and recognizes their achievements through bronze, silver, gold or platinum certification awards.
The Mouvement vélosympathique
is inspired by the Bicycle Friendly America program, which was created in 1980 by The League of American Bicyclists and implemented in Ontario in 2010 by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition.
Recent examples show that when safe, functional cycling infrastructures are made available, cyclists are quick to take advantage of them. As the saying goes, “If you build them, they will come”. We believe that the development of these cycling infrastructures is a necessary step in promoting active transportation, which is why we are proposing this certification system.
The first bicycle friendly awards will be presented in 2016.
