27th Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers
The bicycle issue>> par Vélo Québec Burlington, August 23, 2002 – This year, the annual Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers will be held at the Château Frontenac in the City of Québec (August 26-28). The participants will discuss various issues, including the economy, energy and the environment.
The Government of Québec asked Vélo Québec to organize — in collaboration with Local Motion (Burlington), Lake Champlain Bikeways and the East Coast Greenways Alliance —a unique introduction to the 2002 edition of this conference. Eleven cyclists will take part in a three-day outing (August 23-26) from Burlington, Vermont, to Montréal and then on to the conference site. The participants will explore various portions of Lake Champlain Bikeways and Quebec’s Route verte. When the group of cyclists arrives at the Château Frontenac on Monday, August 26, each of the Premiers and Governors will be presented with an official plaque.
A four-day workshop on wheels
“In addition to marking the opening of this conference, the bicycle outing will allow the representatives from the states and provinces to cycle on bikeways on both sides of the border, to see how work on the greenways is progressing and to discuss the various techniques being used to develop these routes,” said Jean-François Pronovost, Executive Director of Vélo Québec.
Suggestion for Mayor’s quote: “I am very pleased to welcome this group of cyclists, who, by beginning their trip in our city, are underlining Burlington’s strategic location on this greatly symbolic bikeway linking our two countries.”
Suggestion for LCB and Local Motion’s quote: “how LCB and Local Motion are contributing to this networking initiative” OR “how LCB and Local Motion are helping to develop this bikeway network”.
During the three-day tour, the representatives will have an opportunity to cycle on a portion of Lake Champlain Bikeways in Vermont and, on the Québec side of the border, the portions of the Route verte in the Montérégie, Eastern Townships, Mauricie and Portneuf regions.
The cyclists taking part in this tour are representatives of associations or public bodies involved in the development of bikeways in their province or state.
Since 1997, the Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers has actively supported the effort to develop the Route verte and similar bikeways in other eastern Canadian provinces and New England. This has led to, among other things, the posting of cross-border signs marking the links between the Route verte in Québec and bikeways in New Brunswick, Vermont and New York State. This bicycle tour was organized by Vélo Québec in collaboration with the Ministère des Relations internationales du Québec, Local Motion (Burlington), Lake Champlain Bikeways, the East Coast Greenways Alliance and the various partners in the participating provinces and states.
