Grand Tour Desjardins
1,700 Cyclists Visit Gaspé Peninsula and New Brunswick>> par vélo Québec Voyages
Montreal, Wednesday, July 18, 2012 – Veritable bike touring institution in Quebec, Vélo Québec presents the 19th edition of the Grand Tour Desjardins in Gaspé Peninsula–New Brunswick. From August 5 to 11, an impressive caravan of 1,700 cyclists will cover 600 to 900 km in seven days, passing through the municipalities of Matane, Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, New Richmond, Campbellton and Amqui.
The Grand Tour Desjardins is a turnkey bike touring event, including meals, accommodations (hotel or camping), en-route supervision, mechanical support and baggage transportation. For the second year, participants can opt for a tent rental service, including pitching and dismantling. Also, to facilitate their journey to the departure site, Vélo Québec, in partnership with VIA Rail Canada, offers them the opportunity to travel by train with their bike.
The Grand Tour Desjardins is a 100% comfort holiday experience! In addition to professionally designed routes for each edition, participants benefit from a host of services in the Village. Specially organized for the occasion, the Village, which is set up and dismantled at every stage, serves as the campsite, as well as the start and finish point of each route. In the Village, cyclists have access to meals, sanitary facilities, a first aid station, a sports medicine therapist, a mechanics booth and an Internet room. They can also take advantage of the daily activities offered, such as bicycle touring workshops, cinema and artistic performances at the Bistro, as well as catch up on the latest news in Le Déchaîné, the Grand Tour Desjardins daily newsletter. And to unwind after a full day of pedalling, participants can relax at Espace Yoga Metro and the VIA Rail Canada Massage Therapy Zone.
On Monday, August 6, the municipality of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, in cooperation with the magazine Vélo Mag, offers 300 Grand Tour Desjardins cyclists the unique experience of biking Parc de la Gaspésie in Timed Mode. This is not an official race, but rather a unique opportunity to add a measurable challenge to the pleasure of pedalling this magnificent 138-km crossing. Vélo Mag will provide all participants with a one-year subscription to its magazine, as well as a ranking on the site velomag.com. The support of local citizens is welcome!

The Route verte, an original idea of Vélo Québec, has been taking shape since 1995, thanks to the collective effort of an impressive number of local and regional partners. And since the Route verte officially reaches the 5,000-kilometer mark this year, Vélo Québec is taking advantage of its Gaspé Peninsula event to pay tribute to the work of local stakeholders.
