2013 Tour de l’Île de Montréal: choice of 25 km, 50 km or 100 km and kids ride free!

>> par Vélo Québec
Montreal, Tuesday, February 5, 2013 – On June 2, 2013, kids and their families, as well as seasoned cyclists, will be on the move since Vélo Québec is kickstarting the Montreal festival season with a host of changes to enhance the Tour de l’Île de Montréal experience. First, in keeping with its desire to encourage sports among young people, Vélo Québec is inviting kids 12 and under to ride in the event for free. Secondly, participants will have a choice of four routes:  25 km, 50 km, 50 km Express and 100 km. Thirdly, among its bike touring products, Vélo Québec is offering En route pour le Tour de l’Île avec VIA Rail Canada getaways from Quebec City and Ottawa. And lastly, all routes will lead toward the new finish site at the Olympic Park’s Esplanade.

The Ville de Montréal promotes cycling as a means of recreation and transportation and is pleased to support, again this year, the popular Tour de l’Île de Montréal. This event is aimed at families and athletes alike and helps Montrealers to remain healthy and active,” said Richard Deschamps, member of the Montréal Executive Committee responsible for sports and recreation.

Kids in motion - priceless!

Kids and their families will be benefit fully from the Tour de l’Île de Montréal since kids 12 years and under will ride in the event for free and a new 25-km route will allow them to crisscross the city over a shorter distance.  Vélo Québec implemented these initiatives in order to encourage sports among young people and contribute in a concrete way to the challenge launched by the Quebec government to fight sedentarism. “Our gym is the city. Our training program consists of our daily commutes. Our Olympic games are the days when thousands of people take part in a special event like the Tour de l’Île de Montréal,” says Suzanne Lareau, President and CEO of Vélo Québec. “By motivating so many participants to ride through the city streets, we are also inspiring them to adopt urban biking as a mode of transportation.”

As part of its On the move in the community program, Vélo Québec also invites the elementary schools of Greater Montreal to experience or relive the experience of the Tour de l’Île de Montréal.

A multifaceted Tour de l’Île de Montréal

Always striving to offer cyclists a unique, stimulating experience, Vélo Québec is launching a 100-km morning tour: an exploratory route along the city’s shoreline – an actual tour of the island! Cyclists will bike the first 70 kilometers on a marked route open to motorists, and then continue on closed-off streets of the Tour de l’Île de Montréal. On Sunday, June 3, 2013 in the wee hours of the morning, starting at 7 a.m., participants will experience the insular tranquility of Montreal

Seasoned cyclists looking for a sports activity that is both exciting and exhilarating will enjoy the 50 km Express. At 9:15 a.m., spearheading the Tour de l’Île de Montréal, they will bike the route at an average speed of 30 km/h for 1½ hours.

With family or among friends, the Tour de l’Île de Montréal is an opportunity to enjoy a unique group experience. This is especially true this year, since participants will be able to choose – even on the day of the race – a distance of either 25 km or 50 km.

En route to the Tour de l’Île - from Quebec City or Ottawa!

For even more fun, Vélo Québec is inviting 200 cyclists from Quebec City and Ottawa to come to Montreal for the Tour de l’Île in  style – by bike. On Friday and Saturday, participants will ride about 100 km per day to come and participate in the event. They will return home on VIA Rail Canada and the getaway will be organized by Vélo Québec Voyages.

Change of scene!

The 2013 Tour de l’Île de Montréal comprises three 25 km, 50 km and 100 km loops leading to the brand-new finish site located at the Olympic Park’s Esplanade, an urban wonder featuring creations, discoveries, entertainment and physical activity. “The Olympic Park is honoured to host such a major event like the Tour de l'Île de Montréal on its Esplanade. This new partnership between two leading Montreal institutions reaffirms the on going revival of the Olympic Park, based on sport and physical activity" adds David Heurtel, President and CEO of the Olympic Park.
