Developing a cycling network
•In recent years, the development of cycling infrastructures has proceeded at very different rates, depending on the region or urban area in question. In light of Canada's Kyoto Protocol commitments, it is essential that all municipalities be equipped with the tools required to create environments more conducive to the use of the bicycle as a means of transportation (alone or in conjunction with public transportation). To assist municipalities and facilitate this process, Vélo Québec has developed two key tools: the Technical Handbook of Bikeway Design and the technical training course “Bikeway Planning and Development.”

TG
The new edition of the Technical Handbook of Bikeway Design (also available in French as Guide technique d'aménagement des voies cyclables) is targeted mainly at land-use and transportation planning professionals. It is of particular interest to municipal professionals and decision-makers involved in the effort to increase the role of the bicycle in public transportation. The various topics addressed in the guide are dealt with in a manner that applies to all provinces, no matter what their regulatory particularities. Given its content and scope, the Technical Handbook of Bikeway Design is the only current Canadian reference tool of its kind available in both official languages.

The “Bikeway Planning and Development” training course is a one-day workshop examining the best practices used to develop cycling infrastructures. The workshops are offered in various municipalities, making it possible to customize the training to meet local needs. Each workshop includes an overview of the municipal or regional situation, a theoretical component and a practical field trip (site visit, simulation, scenario development, etc.).

These workshops are open to various kinds of participants: municipal professionals, decision-makers, elected officials, opinion leaders, representatives of non-profit organizations, cycling associations, etc.
