Montréal, November 2001 — The prestigious American magazine Bicycling has just released its list of the best cycling cities in North America. As you will recall, in 1999, the magazine awarded Montréal the coveted title “best cycling city on the continent.” This year, Montréal ranks as the best cycling city in the “over one million inhabitants” category.

Our city stands out because of its strong cycling culture, as demonstrated by the Tour de l’Île, La Maison des cyclistes and the ongoing efforts of Vélo Québec and the forty or so employees of Le Groupe vélo to make Montréal more bicycle friendly. The magazine also points to various features of the city’s bikeway network: the links between the island of Montréal and its suburbs to the north and south, the Route verte project as well as the integration of certain key cycling routes into the urban fabric.
