Objectives Achieved

For the 250 participants at the first Canada-wide active transportation conference held on June 3 and 4 in Montreal, the term “active transportation” is undoubtedly no longer a concept, but rather a reality that is being expressed in various ways throughout Canada and abroad.

Emphasis must be given to the excellent work done by the forty speakers, panellists and moderators to promote the best Quebec, Canadian and international active transportation practices. The participants, stakeholders in the health, education, environmental and transportation sectors, were also able to take advantage of these two discussion days to contribute to the development of Quebec and Canadian active transportation networks as well as the advancement and improvement of initiatives in this field.

A first exceptional major gathering during a highly exciting week of the Montreal Bike Fest - nothing less! A unique opportunity for pioneers and developers in the rapidly growing field of active transportation to take stock of everything that is helping to create pleasant, safe environments in cities and communities for getting about by foot or by bike, as well as to take part in the activities of the world’s largest bike festival.

Goals of the conference

Until recently, the phrase “active transportation” was more likely to be associated with a concept, not a practice. Of course, getting from one place to another actively is not new. However, if we once walked to school or to work, it was most likely motivated by necessity, not by a lifestyle choice or, even less so, by a will to save the planet! The conference will focus on all the various strategies and techniques that contribute to the development of cyclist- and pedestrian-friendly urban environments.

On the Move in the Community! conference aims to:

1. Showcase best practices in active transportation from Quebec, Canada and abroad.
2. Offer networking opportunities to practitioners from various backgrounds (health, education, environment, transportation, etc).
3. Facilitate the development of durable and sustainable active transportation networks in Quebec and in Canada
4. Facilitate the development of active transportation in Quebec and in Canada as well as improve current initiatives.
