Tips and tricks for better pedaling
Before you set off, here's some advice and a checklist of things to bring on Tour day.
Checklist Please bring: your race number; a few snacks or a picnic; sun cream; a raincoat; identification; your water bottle. Thank you for helping us to ride in an eco-responsible way.
Bike in good condition
Before setting off, make sure your bike is in good condition: tires properly inflated; components properly adjusted and oiled (brakes, chain, derailleur, etc.); accessories properly attached to the bike (luggage rack, basket, bottle cage, pump, etc.).
Fuel for the road
Start the day with a good breakfast. During the hike, drink regularly and pack snacks. If you want to picnic, plan ahead.
Comfortable clothing
Bring rain gear and a windbreaker. Place everything in a plastic bag, to be slipped into a bicycle pannier, basket or bag securely fastened to the luggage rack. Avoid backpacks.
Road tips and services
Riding among many cyclists during the Tour de l’Île de Montréal requires a minimum of caution. In general, traffic flows smoothly, but slowdowns can occur. Pedal at your own pace, and watch out for imperfections in the road. If volunteers ask you to give way to pedestrians wishing to cross the street, or to an emergency vehicle, please be courteous.
Signal your intentions
Use your arm or your voice to signal your intention to stop, turn or overtake (always from the left). If you want to stop, avoid sudden stops. Clear the way and pull over to the side of the road.
Protect your head
Wearing a helmet is recommended. A well-fitting helmet won't slip on the forehead or the back of the neck; the front and rear straps come together, and the chin strap isn't too tight.
If you're riding in the rain
Brake efficiency decreases. Drive more slowly and allow more distance to stop. In case of heavy rain, it's best to take shelter and wait.
If you're riding with a child
Is the child in a seat or trailer? Securely fasten the straps provided and protect his head with a helmet. Stop at serviced access points so he can stretch his legs. Coat him with sun cream, bring a raincoat and don't leave any objects in his hands (bottles, toys, etc.).
The child has his own bicycle? If they are under 14, they must be accompanied by an adult. Make sure they have identification, a snack and the phone number of a parent or friend (on the inside of their bib). Point out Infovélo as a rallying point at access points with services.
For more information, consult our Toolbox (children on bikes, SAFETY TIPS).
