In recent years, the subject of cycling has emerged as an object of public policy in France. Since 2018, the country has had a national bicycle plan that aims to make it a means of everyday transport in its own right. The development of cycling policies is the fruit of the combined work of the State - via this national cycling plan - and action on the ground by local public authorities.
The Bicycle Plan and local cycling policies thus act simultaneously on several fronts of the cycling system: learning to cycle, developing a quality cycling network, increasing the number of secure parking facilities, supporting services (purchase, rental, repair), and developing an economic sector to stimulate employment, innovation and tourism.
Tourism plays a key role in this national cycling plan and the French cycling system. By 2030, France aims to become the world's leading cycling destination. Its assets are many, and its actions to achieve this goal are ambitious: development of intermodality with public transport, development of a label, etc. Bike home to qualify services for cyclists (in accommodation, catering and services), structuring and developing a network of connected cycle routes, public funding programs dedicated to cycle tourism, structuring partners through a national cycle tourism strategy, etc.
