Announcement concerning overtaking and 1m distance A good news for the new season!

The Minister of Transport, Sustainable Mobility and Transportation Electrification, Mr. Jacques Daoust, has just announced two important amendments to the Highway Safety Code (HSC): increased fines for motorists who create a bicycle accident by opening their door, and the introduction of a minimum distance of 1 meter for motorists when overtaking cyclists. On the issue of impounding, Vélo Québec believes that fines should be significantly increased and accompanied by demerit points to act as a deterrent. These measures must also be accompanied by communication and awareness-raising campaigns.

Vélo Québec applauds the Minister's decision to adopt these two measures this spring, but reminds us that cyclists are impatiently awaiting the complete modernization of the Highway Safety Code, which has already been in the works for two years.

May, Bike Month

For the second year, Vélo Québec proclaims the month of May Quebec Bike Month. The aim of this event is to pool information on the many activities organized in Quebec during this month to stimulate cycling. It also serves to disseminate useful information to make cycling outings and journeys safer and more enjoyable. But above all, May is the perfect time to remind everyone - pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike - of the importance of sharing the road in harmony. Because if the weather's nice in May, it's even nicer on a bike!

During Bike Month, Vélo Québec invites you to participate in the following events cycling activities organized for the occasion in your region. The calendar of events published on the www.moisduvelo.quebec already lists over 70 activities in 11 regions of Quebec.

In addition to activities, the site offers a number of useful tips to get the season off to a good start - riding safely, riding with children, choosing your bike and protecting yourself against theft - as well as a new bike-to-work guide which, in 20 pages, clearly explains how and why you can get around by bike in an urban environment, as well as an analysis that debunks a few myths in fine style. I live too far from my workplacei don't want to ride in the rain, etc.

We've also thought about urban cycling enthusiasts. The magazine City by bike, a special issue of Ma bikeg distributed free of charge in major Quebec cities, talks about trends and urban cycling here and around the world. A nice nod to urban bike culture.

Happy May on your bike!
