Last July, the Superior Court dismissed the motion of 3 cyclists who were contesting the fact that cyclists guilty of a highway safety code offence are deducted demerit points from their driver's licence, even though the latter is not required for cycling. The motion was therefore ruled inadmissible by the judge. The debate was therefore not on the substance of the problem, but on a question of law. Vélo Québec has intervened with the SAAQ on numerous occasions over the past 10 years to ensure that the government corporation applies its regulations more realistically. We hope this battle will continue. Only people who have received a ticket can take legal action, and the next one will have to follow a different route than the last one that was rejected. We will continue to follow the case and keep you informed.
