Vélo sous zéro 2015: An invitation to take part in Vélo Québec's winter happening

When you love cycling, you have to accept a few inconveniences (heatwave, rain, wind or snow) to enjoy the pleasure of riding. And while the vast majority of cyclists put their bikes away when the cold weather arrives, more and more of them - the so-called die-hards - continue to pedal through the cold season.

Original, fly-by-night and intriguing for many, this reality has become part of our urban landscape. And with good reason: the winter climate offers us a wide range of conditions, including pavements that are often dry and snow-free. Let's not forget that it was 5ºC at Christmas, and that many of us took our bikes out for a spring-like ride.

Last year, when Vélo Québec launched Vélo sous zéro, its first winter happening, 500 cyclists turned up for this unique experience. The majority were «four-season» cyclists, but there were also adults and children giving winter a try for the first time, out of curiosity and for the fun of it. Well-covered by the media, the event demystified winter cycling by demonstrating that, even in the cold and snow, cycling in the city is a unique and totally realistic experience. All you need to do is ride to your comfort level, equip your bike and dress appropriately.

At last month's Je vois Montréal event, Vélo Québec pledged to promote winter cycling in Montreal and to organize an annual winter cycling happening. The second edition of Vélo sous zéro will be held on February 15, and aims to double last year's participation. If you're interested in the experience, I invite you to get in touch with us. register here. It's free, it's for everyone and yes, it's a little crazy to our North American eyes, but I assure you that Scandinavians wouldn't see anything unusual in it.

Have a good winter!
