Québec Science's 10 discoveries of 2025: a portrait of Quebec's scientific excellence

Montreal, Thursday, January 8, 2026 Québec Science today unveils the 10 discoveries of 2025. Now in its 33rd year, this annual list highlights the excellence of Quebec's scientific research. 

This year, the jury, made up of scientists and journalists, received over 75 research projects. Following a rigorous analysis process, 10 finalist discoveries were selected for their originality, scientific significance and potential benefits for society. 

The 10 discoveries of 2025

  1. Canada's first dragonfly fossil from the dinosaur era

  2. Analysis of a falling asteroid
    Auriane Egal, Planetarium / Space for life
  3. Seven times more methane emitted by inactive gas wells than previously thought
    Mary Kang et al, McGill University
  4. A revolutionary optical microchip for greener AI
    Wei Shi et al, University Laval
  5. Discovery of an unsuspected link between muscles and fertility hormones
    Bernard Daniel, McGill University
  6. A new parachute concept inspired by the Japanese art of kirigami

  7. Using car filters to study airborne antibiotic resistance genes
    Paul George and Caroline Duchaine, University Laval
  8. Blocking a molecular cancer switch

«The 10 Discoveries competition is a real tradition, highlighting the exceptional work of the province's scientists,» says Marine Corniou, the magazine's editor-in-chief. 

An invitation to the public: vote for your favorite discovery

Québec Science invites the public to vote for their favorite of the 10 selected discoveries. Voting is open from January 8 to February 18, 2026. By participating, the public has a chance to win a family outing to the heart of the Mont-Mégantic International Dark Sky Reserve, valued at 700 $, including :

  • 2 nights in an ECHO chalet in Parc national du Mont-Mégantic
  • 1 daytime visit to the ASTROLab and Observatory, including the film Emergence
  • 1 evening astronomy show at the ASTROLab
  • Access to hiking trails during your stay

Participants also have the chance to win one of 10 annual subscriptions to the magazine Québec Science.
