Cycling, solution and destination
Vélo Québec Association is recognized by the government as a national recreational organization for its role in promoting and developing recreational cycling. But cycling is much more than a leisure activity: it plays a key role in sustainable mobility, congestion reduction and tourism development in Quebec. Its benefits are recognized by a wide range of players, from municipalities to public health professionals to road safety experts. This growing interest in cycling across all regions of Quebec was highlighted by our professional symposium which in October 2024 brought together some 300 professionals from 16 regions of Quebec to share best practices.
Working behind the scenes
The year 2024 was exceptional on the cycling infrastructure development front: the number of municipalities and organizations supported by our consulting service almost doubled during the year. We were able to provide active transportation and school safety plans, as well as recommendations on recreational pathways, to some forty municipalities and organizations, in addition to offering professional training to more than 50 people, who will then be able to apply best practices in pedestrian and cyclist-friendly development in their own communities.
Route verte and bike tourism on the rise!
Vélo Québec is also the prime contractor for the Route verte, the largest cycling route in North America. And in this respect, 2024 was also an excellent year, with the Quebec government announcing the approval of an additional 130 km of the Route verte in Charlevoix. A great gift to give on the eve of its 30th anniversary! The year 2024 also marks the end of our concerted efforts with Quebec's tourism stakeholders. At the end of this vast consultation tour, which brought together more than 520 partners, we are proud to share with you a report on our work. Roadmap for the development of bicycle tourism 2025-2030. The common vision that has emerged, and the concrete actions that have been identified, will help develop the full potential of cycling tourism in Quebec!
Cycling is evolving, and Vélo Québec is spreading the good news!
Sharing knowledge and new trends is also part of our organization's mission. That's why, in 2024, we wanted to introduce the cargo bike to Quebec households. This formidable mobility tool for families was put forward thanks to a campaign video, based on testimonials from user families, on the web and in social and traditional media, where it has attracted a great deal of interest.
Bike Month finally officially recognized
2024 also saw the official proclamation, by the National Assembly, of May as Bicycle Month in Quebec. A wonderful recognition for all the municipalities and organizations that have been taking advantage of the fine days of May to encourage their residents and customers to get back in the saddle! This great spirit was supported by our usual Bike Month Challenge and promotional campaign On your bike, you can! featuring several Quebecers who use bicycles despite certain constraints.
Vélo Québec Association's annual report will be released at the upcoming Annual General Meeting on April 29. It will provide a better appreciation of the work accomplished by our team of enthusiasts over the past year.
