Montreal, September 19, 2018 - Today, at Laval, we held the forum Promoting cycling in your community, an initiative of Vélo Québec, as part of the VELOSYMPATHIC movement. Kicked off by the mayor of Laval, Marc Demers, the event brought together some one hundred elected officials and municipal professionals who are committed to promoting bicycle travel in their areas. For Vélo Québec, this event is a way of encouraging the spread of best practices in the municipal sector.
The day included a number of technical presentations on recent developments in Gatineau, Laval, Longueuil, Drummondville and Quebec City, among others. A hands-on workshop even enabled everyone to familiarize themselves with the complete street concept, which ensures that all users are taken into account when a street is planned or rebuilt. Last but not least, the forum gave mayors Pascal Bonin (Granby) and Serge Péloquin (Sorel-Tracy), and mayors Sue Montgomery (Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâces) and Caryl Green (Chelsea) the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to making cycling a bigger part of their communities.

For Vélo Québec, choosing Laval as the meeting place for players in the VELOSYMPATHIC Movement was a fine way of recognizing the efforts made by this city in terms of active mobility, and of inspiring others, where major boulevards are multiplying, to review their practices. On the eve of the meeting, some thirty people took part in a technical tour of Laval's most recent achievements in the field of bicycle lanes. These innovative, high-quality developments are designed to inspire Lavallois to change their habits in favour of active transport.
