Montreal, February 6, 2024 - Vélo Québec is delighted with the announcements made by Quebec City regarding cycling development for the next decade. The plan unveiled today on its 2024-2034 vision for the Vélo cité corridors (CVC), a safe and comfortable network, testifies to a great ambition in favor of active and sustainable mobility. The announced additions to bicycle corridors on the outskirts of and in downtown Quebec City will complete the city's main cycling routes and create a structured network totaling 150 km by 2034. The city is thus demonstrating its commitment to making cycling part of everyday life for all its citizens, and to developing a genuine cycling culture.

Three key elements of this plan are worth highlighting:

  1. The desire to reach the whole of the city by connecting the various boroughs, thus offering safe options to citizens who can more easily choose active mobility.
  2. The decision to start the plan quickly with projects that are easier to carry out, prioritizing light work, an approach that will offer alternatives for cycling in the short and medium term.
  3. The choice to develop quality facilities, an essential factor in ensuring that as many people as possible can choose to cycle and thus have an impact on their health, quality of life and safety.

What's more, it's essential to keep a clear-eyed view of the role of consultation. A consultative approach is relevant for informing citizens of upcoming changes, identifying blind spots and thus improving projects. However, it must be borne in mind that it will never be possible to reach a consensus. Through this process, cities must maintain a clear vision to ensure the success of their cycling development plan.

« We believe that this investment in cycling infrastructure is essential to building more sustainable and healthier communities. In the current context, cycling is a simple solution to complex problems such as climate change and inflation, and contributes to improving the health of Quebecers. Bicycles must be given a more prominent place in cities, and today's plan should serve as an inspiration for all Quebec municipalities. »Vélo Québec is looking forward to seeing the concrete results of this initiative, and is committed to supporting the City's efforts to implement this plan.
