Vélo Québec applauds the development of the park slab for the Turcot project!

21 June 2018

Montreal, Thursday, June 21, 2018 - It is with great enthusiasm that Vélo Québec welcomes the announcement by André Fortin, Minister of Transport, Sustainable Mobility and Transportation Electrification, to build a pedestrian-bicycle link across the Turcot project expressways. After having been presented in the initial plan for the major project and then abandoned, the idea of a link for active mobility is back with firm commitments from Minister Fortin and Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.

«We're delighted that the Minister has come to the conclusion that, in the context of a project of the scale of Turcot and the urban disruption it creates, it is necessary to provide this park-and-ride facility. It goes without saying that Vélo Québec will offer its full support to the City of Montreal and to the Ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l'Électrification des transports, for the remainder of the project,» emphasized the Minister. Suzanne Lareau, President and CEO of Vélo Québec.»

This green viaduct will re-establish a safe and pleasant pedestrian and bicycle link between the neighborhoods on either side of the highway right-of-way: the Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de Grâce borough, north of the Saint-Jacques cliff, and the Ville-Émard district in the Sud-Ouest borough. Here's an opportunity to at least partially repair the mistakes of the past.

Vélo Québec reminds us that it is essential to systematically take advantage of any roadworks to ensure that pedestrians and cyclists are not forgotten or placed in situations that jeopardize their safety or restrict opportunities for active travel.
