Montreal, Tuesday, October 11, 2017 - In autumn, darkness falls earlier and earlier, and riding in the dark becomes common practice. Many cyclists believe, often mistakenly, that urban lighting (streetlights, storefronts, etc.) is enough to ensure their visibility. Vélo Québec reminds cyclists that it's mandatory and essential to have a bike equipped with reflectors and an active lighting system!
«Accidents that happen on bicycles at night are over-represented in relation to the practice. Without lights, white lights in front and red lights behind, cyclists are invisible at night. It's an obligation under the Highway Safety Code, but above all it's common sense to equip yourself with lights! Being seen is important not only for your own safety, but also for that of others», says Suzanne Lareau, President and CEO of Vélo Québec.
Vélo Québec's recommendations are simple:
- Equip your bike with active lighting (white light at the front, red at the rear);
- Equip your bike with reflectors, especially in the wheels;
- Choose accessories with reflective strips (helmets, panniers, trouser clips, clothing, tires, etc.).
