Montreal, Monday, June 26, 2017 - The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the Northern Plan, Mr. Pierre Arcand, today unveiled his 2017-2020 Action Plan stemming from the Energy Policy 2030. Given the intentions expressed in the Energy Policy 2030, with regard to the promotion of active transportation, and the scale of the 1.5 G$ investments provided for in the plan, Vélo Québec reiterates to the Minister three proposals presented during the 2013 public consultations, which could be integrated into the Go Green program:
- A rebate on the purchase of a 500$ electric-assist bicycle, as offered on the purchase of an electric limited-speed motorcycle;
- A tax exemption on the first $500$ on the purchase of a bicycle;
- An increase in the program enabling municipalities to develop cycling infrastructure. The current program, managed by the Ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l'Électrification des transports (MDTMDET), provides for annual investments of $5M$. According to Vélo Québec, the Quebec government should aim to invest $100 million annually in cycling infrastructure, in partnership with the municipal and federal governments.
