Montreal, Thursday, December 6, 2018 - Vélo Québec congratulates the 5 communities and 13 organizations newly recognized by the VELOSYMPATHIC movement. The program promotes the development of a cycling culture throughout Quebec, and encourages communities and organizations to make cycling a real transportation and leisure option for all.

Through their commitment to the approach, the communities and organizations recognized today identify themselves as living environments that value active mobility, physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits. They join the 20 communities and 42 organizations already recognized by the program since 2016. They encourage their residents, employees, students and visitors to cycle by taking action in at least two of the five areas essential to the development of a genuine cycling culture: environment, education, encouragement, support, evaluation and planning.

«This round of certification is also an opportunity to recognize the efforts invested by the Sainte-Julie community and by the CAE and Polytechnique Montréal organizations, all three of which were applying in the fall of 2018 after having been recognized by the program for the first time previously. The Ville de Sainte-Julie, which received bronze level certification in 2016, has now been awarded silver level certification, while CAE, which received bronze level certification in 2016, has been awarded gold level certification. As for Polytechnique Montréal, it was awarded an honorable mention in 2017 and now receives bronze-level certification. We would like to congratulate this community and these organizations for implementing the recommendations obtained following their first submission, enabling them to increase the bicycle culture in their environment and thus achieve a higher level of VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE certification», says Suzanne Lareau, president and CEO of Vélo Québec.

The certification approach: a continuous improvement process

Candidates are evaluated by a panel of expert judges on the basis of the actions implemented in their community in each of the 5 fields of intervention, and taking into account the specific realities of the candidate (size, geographical location, etc.).

Candidates who do not meet the certification criteria, but who demonstrate a clear commitment to the development of a bicycle culture, receive an honorable mention. Certified communities and organizations are awarded a level of certification (bronze, silver, gold, platinum or diamond) based on the relevance and number of actions implemented in their community.

All candidates receive a feedback report with recommendations they can implement to continue their efforts. They are also invited to reapply after three years, to assess how far they have come.

Organizations and communities wishing to become involved in the VELOSYMPATHIC approach are invited to visit the VELOSYMPATHIC website. www.velosympathique.com where they can find all the details about certification, as well as numerous tools and resources to help them develop cycling in their communities. The next deadline for applications is March 29, 2019.

About VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE

The VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE movement encourages communities and organizations to make cycling a real transportation and leisure option for all. Through a rigorous certification process, it offers tools and support services to communities and organizations working to promote cycling.

Launched by Vélo Québec in 2015, the VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE movement is inspired by the Bicycle Friendly America program, created in 1980 by The League of American Bicyclists, and implemented in Ontario by Share the Road Cycling Coalition in 2010. The VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE movement is financed by the Green Fund as part of Action-Climat Québec, a program of the Ministère de l'Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques stemming from the 2013-2020 Action Plan on Climate Change. The program also receives financial support from Québec en Forme.

About the Green Fund

The Green Fund, into which 100 % of the revenues generated by carbon market auctions are paid, finances the implementation of measures in the 2013-2020 Action Plan on Climate Change. These aim to reduce GHG emissions and improve Quebec society's ability to adapt to the impacts of climate change. To date, the carbon market has generated more than $2.6 billion in revenues for Quebec, which are used to support Quebec businesses, municipalities, institutions and citizens in their transition to a more low-carbon world.

About Vélo Québec
