Montreal, September 8, 2022 - In 2022, cycling is more popular than ever. And in the current context, it is positioned as a simple solution to complex problems such as climate change or inflation, and contributes to improving the health of Quebecers. That's why cycling needs to play a bigger role in government policy. On October 3, Quebecers will choose their government for the next four years. It is in this context that Vélo Québec presents its priorities to the political parties.
These requests focus on three main themes: investments to support the development of bicycle facilities, road safety and the promotion of bicycle use for active transportation or leisure. Among these, Vélo Québec recommends :
- Increase the amount currently invested in municipal financial assistance programs for active transportation infrastructure. in order to achieve a minimum annual investment of 100 M$, more than double the 41 to 48 M$ currently invested. This would enable municipalities to catch up in the development of walking and cycling infrastructure, and provide complete streets that take into account the needs and safety of all road users.
- Respect the principle of complete street, This includes active transportation facilities (sidewalks and bike lanes) for all Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) projects within urban perimeters. The complete street is designed and laid out to be safe, practical and pleasant for all users, whatever their mode of transport, physical condition or age.
« For Vélo Québec, it is essential that the MTQ respect this principle in all its projects within urban perimeters, particularly in the heart of villages. Financing and developing the road network so that cyclists' needs are systematically taken into account will help develop cycling among those who currently feel unsafe enough to pedal. »says Jean-François Rheault, President and CEO, Vélo Québec.
- Grant subsidies to support the purchase of electrically-assisted bicycles (EABs), In addition to the federal and provincial subsidies available to drivers wishing to acquire an electric vehicle. The versatility of the EAB makes it an important tool for promoting active transportation; whether for utilitarian, professional or leisure use, this type of bike offers a real alternative to the auto-solo, as well as a credible option for practicing sustainable transportation on a larger scale.
