Flu: can we trust the vaccine?

6 October 2017

Montreal, Friday, October 6, 2017 - In its October-November 2017 issue, on newsstands now, Québec Science magazine takes stock of the famous seasonal flu vaccine. As studies reveal its flaws, scientists question the relevance of this annual ritual. The conclusion is unanimous: we urgently need to develop a better vaccine!

Flu vaccine: mixed results!

Gaston De Serres, epidemiologist at the Institut national de santé publique du Québec, told the Québec Science team: «If you get vaccinated every year for 40 years, with a vaccine that protects against 50% and a risk of contracting influenza of 3% to 5% each season, you avoid a single bout of flu on average. In short, instead of catching it twice in 40 years, we'll only get it once.»
