Montreal, Wednesday, May 27, 2020 - To meet the population's new mobility needs related to COVID-19, Vélo Québec is proud to contribute its consulting service by offering Quebec municipalities, free of charge, a guide to equip them to set up temporary facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
To comply with the latest rules of physical distancing, many people are now adopting walking and cycling as a leisure activity or an alternative to public transport for getting around safely, in addition to recognizing its many physical and mental health benefits. «Vélo Québec's consulting department - a multidisciplinary team of urban planners, engineers, geomaticians and geographers - is delighted to contribute to the collective effort of Quebec's cities and municipalities to encourage active travel in their communities and, ultimately, to help them discover the many benefits of active, sustainable mobility,» says Annick St-Denis, General Manager of Vélo Québec Association.
Available free of charge online on the Advisory Service website, the practical guide to temporary measures for pedestrians and cyclists presents various temporary facilities dedicated to pedestrians, cyclists or shared use, as well as information on temporary separators, signage and traffic calming. Any municipality wishing further assistance in developing temporary facilities or improving its cycling network can call on the services of Vélo Québec's team of experts.
Code of conduct for cyclists in times of pandemic
With the arrival of warmer weather, many cyclists are keen to enjoy the fresh air and ride their bikes to get around, stay in shape or go for a ride. To ensure the harmonious cohabitation of all road users - pedestrians, cyclists and motorists - everyone must work together to adopt safe driving habits and comply with the recommendations issued by public health authorities in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since May 20, Vélo Québec has published the Code of conduct for cyclists in times of pandemic. There's advice for everyone before you set off on your bike, advice on the different types of cycling (on roads, cycle paths, mountain bike trails, bike parks, etc.) and advice for cycling clubs.
