Montreal, October 4, 2018 - Vélo Québec and its partners are launching a safety campaign aimed at cyclists. The theme of the campaign is On the road, our safety is linked to that of others and addresses the issue of sharing the road, with the aim of raising cyclists' awareness of the behavior to adopt and the rules to follow to ride safely.
For Suzanne Lareau, President and CEO of Vélo Québec, «this campaign is an appeal to everyone to show courtesy. Good behavior on the road creates a positive chain reaction for all road users, whether cyclists, pedestrians or motorists. At Vélo Québec, safety has been at the heart of our mission for over 50 years, and we hope this campaign will encourage cyclists to ride well. The road record shows significant progress in recent years, but there's always room for improvement.»
The campaign illustrates recurring problems on the road and aims to inform people about ways to improve their safety when cycling. Themes covered include: overtaking, the direction of traffic, speed, eye contact at intersections, bus priority, traffic lights, cohabitation with trucks - which still claims many victims - and the importance of being visible at night, a most relevant topic at the start of autumn.
