Vélo Québec is delighted with the first «Montréal, ville cyclable» bicycle master plan, announced by the city this morning!

15 September 2017

Montreal, September 15, 2017 - This morning, the Ville de Montréal unveiled its first-ever bicycle master plan Montreal, a cycling city. Vélo Québec congratulates the city on this ambitious political commitment, which is aimed at the right issues, in particular increasing the modal share of bicycle travel to 15 % within 15 years, thanks to concrete actions and a major financial commitment of 150 M$ invested over 5 years.

The city is also committed to systematically integrating the needs of cyclists into the existing road network and all future street development or redevelopment projects, which represents a new way of doing things.

Today's announcement also includes a collaboration with Vélo Québec to develop a downtown bicycle accessibility plan. Such a collaboration took place in 2005 and led to the development of the Claire-Morissette bike path on De Maisonneuve Boulevard and certain sections around the McGill University campus.

«This is a historic announcement for cycling in Montreal. This gesture had become essential to ensure the comfort and safety of bicycle travel in Montreal, and also to enable those who are still hesitating to opt for cycling,» asserts Suzanne Lareau, President and CEO of Vélo Québec.
