Dressing for winter riding

More and more cyclists are riding in all four seasons. If you dress appropriately and follow these basic tips, you'll probably get the bug and realize that there's no reason to deny yourself the pleasure of riding all year round!

These tips and tricks are taken from the 2 wheels, 4 seasons of ENvironnement JEUnesse.

Tip: It's just like cross-country skiing! When you're out cycling for more than 10 minutes, the best guide to adjusting your clothing is your tolerance to the cold. Ideally, you should be a little chilly when you first start pedaling, so that you're comfortable after the first few kilometers. If you're feeling warm when you set off, you might find that third layer of fleece superfluous after a few minutes of pedaling!

On your head

Summer helmet + toque + neck warmer If you're looking for your first winter biking experience, but don't want to spend a lot of money on specialized clothing, we've got just the thing for you! Simply slip on a thin toque under your helmet and a neck warmer!

Winter helmet + neck warmer the nec plus ultra! The winter helmet is the helmet you can wear on skis too. With its integrated earmuffs and shape designed to hold your ski goggles, this helmet is just what you need to face winter on your two wheels! Just remember to wear a neck warmer, because this helmet doesn't protect your neck... that's its only flaw!

Ski goggles Ski goggles: in cold or snowy weather, to keep your eyes from freezing or to ward off the flakes, put on your ski goggles! They're a must-have accessory for all-season cyclists.

Coats

Waterproof and breathable coat (5°C and +) ideal for a rainy autumn day! The coat protects you from wind and water without too much sweat, especially if it's equipped with ventilation zippers, perfect for ventilating your armpits!

Waterproof and breathable coat (-5°C to + 5°C) at this temperature, conditions are hard to predict... The watchword: stay dry, because at -5°C, getting wet is a real bummer, especially if the wind picks up! Always carry a waterproof coat, which not only cuts the wind but also protects you from dirt.

Winter coat ( -5°C and below) when winter shows up and blows its icy wind and flakes in your face, you need to be prepared! In this situation, wearing your winter coat is the best solution. A cross-country ski jacket with good ventilation is ideal, but your good old winter coat will also do the trick. If it's really cold? Simply add an undercoat!

Gloves and mittens

Small neoprene gloves Neoprene gloves: (5°C and +) small neoprene gloves are ideal for keeping your hands warm, even in the rain!

Three-finger gloves (-5°C to + 5°C) opt for a warm winter glove... with three fingers, for better dexterity!

Mittens If it's cold out there (-5°C and below), since the extremities freeze the fastest, protect your hands with a pair of warm mittens! If you're the chilly type or the temperature drops below -15°C, you can add a pair of gloves to your mittens.

Pants

Waterproof and breathable pants When the weather is rainy (5°C and +), wearing these pants is the perfect way to stay comfortable! They can be worn over shorts in summer, or over pants when the mercury is lower!

Waterproof and breathable pants (-15°C to + 5°C) in winter, wearing waterproof, breathable pants over your outfit will keep you warm and protect you from dirt!

Waterproof and breathable pants In cold weather (-30°C to -15°C), it's essential to protect yourself from the wind and get rid of moisture! To do this, wear waterproof, breathable pants over a warm suit or pants.

In your feet

Rain boots To keep your feet dry, a good pair of old-fashioned rain boots (5°C and +) will do the trick for short distances. Otherwise, expect your feet to be soaked... with perspiration!

Waterproof shoes + overshoes (-15°C to + 5°C) to protect your feet, slipping on a waterproof overshoe over your favourite shoes will keep you comfortable without compromising your style when you get to your destination!

Winter boots (-30°C to -15°C) in your feet, a warm winter boot... but make sure you're comfortable on your pedals.
