I don't like riding in traffic.

I can't do my shopping by bike.

I'm not fit enough.

Answers to debunk certain prejudices

It's too far

Unless you live more than 12 km from your destination, cycling is an easy and efficient option!

  • < 6 km Allow less than 25 minutes from door to door.
  • 6 to 12 km 25 to 50 minutes travel time
  • > 12 km You'll have to equip yourself accordingly.

You could also decide to make the trip two or three times a week or combine modes of transportation (use your bike to get to the train or metro station or finish your trip on BIXI).

To get a good idea of how long the trip will take and which route to take, try it out on a day off!

I don't know where to park my bike

  • Find out if bicycle parking is available nearby.
  • Check if it's possible to bring your bike to your destination.
  • Ask for bicycle parking.

I'm not fit enough

Try it once a week, then gradually increase the frequency according to your comfort level. But be careful: pleasure grows with use!

Start by taking the bus, train or metro part of the way. Gradually increase the distance.

You'll soon find that instead of exhausting you, cycling will improve your physical condition and give you energy!

I have to carry my shopping

A bike is a great mule: just add a pannier or basket.

And remember: it's much easier to park a bike than a car in front of the store of your choice!

I need to take my children to school or daycare

Riding your kids' bikes is a great way to get them excited about cycling and active travel! Take the opportunity to teach them how to get around your neighborhood.

I'm going to sweat

Cycling is not a race: ride more slowly and you'll arrive completely dry. Also, don't dress too warmly, opt for multi-layer clothing and remove a layer as soon as you warm up.

Want to take advantage of your trip to train? Check if you have access to a shower at your destination.

I'll get wet if it rains

It's possible to cycle in the rain - just dress accordingly!

  • Is it raining at the start?
Put on your rain gear or opt for public transport.
  • Rain is forecast for the end of the day?
Take your rain gear with you for the trip home.

And if the rain bothers you, only ride your bike on sunny days.

I'll have to drive in traffic

Plan your route so that you use mostly low-traffic streets and bike lanes. It's better to take small detours and feel comfortable on the street than to take a more direct route that's stressful because of traffic. Ask other cyclists for advice and they'll be able to describe the route they take.

If you can't avoid streets with heavy traffic, be sure to drive carefully.

I'm tired at the end of the day

Unless you have a physical job, your fatigue is certainly linked to the stress and psychological effort required to accomplish your tasks. A moderate pedal home will decompress you, free your mind and give you energy!
