What better way to promote cycling to the general public than with a participatory and inspiring activity?
In view of the current situation, be sure to follow the latest government advisories and comply with health measures in force when organizing a cycling activity.
Here are some activities that can be organized to encourage people to use their bikes for work, for a ride or for training.
Ask your local mayor or MP to officially proclaim May as Bike Month in your city or region.
Encourage local merchants to develop exclusive offers for customers who arrive by bike. Promote these offers to encourage cycling in your community.
Make your community's bikeway map available at city hall, in your community's businesses or on your municipality's or organization's website. Several regional tourist associations produce maps of cycling routes in their area, which they make available free of charge. There is also a map of bike paths in Greater Montreal.
Organize the counting the number of cyclists cycle at key points in your community's cycling network and publicize the results; offer a prize to the Xth cyclist counted in a day.
Organize a mechanics clinic to ensure that cyclists have a bike in good condition for the season. Ask your local bike store or a member of the public familiar with bike mechanics to come and run the workshop.
Organize open-house events at community bike mechanics workshops in your community. It's a great way to show citizens how these workshops work, and to inspire them to take charge of their own bike maintenance!
Organize a bike chiseling booth for cyclists with the help of the police, who can offer this service. Take the opportunity to give advice on the types of locks to use and the correct way to lock your bike.
Organize a bike swap event: encourage citizens to come and exchange or sell an undersized or unused bike at a modest price, giving someone else the chance to ride away with a new bike. A simple gesture to help reuse our resources.
Organize a ride with the mayor or an elected official in your municipality. As well as helping to legitimize cycling, it's an excellent way of raising awareness among elected officials of the importance of having quality facilities and maintaining them. It's also a good opportunity to draw media attention to the issue.
Organize a bike tour of your neighborhood following a thematic route: gourmet, historical, youth, etc. Plan a time and place to meet, then invite the public to take part.
During rush hour, a cyclist, a public transit rider and a motorist all start at the same point and travel to the same destination by the route of their choice. All must respect the highway safety code. For the race to be a success, the route must be between 4 and 8 km long, and the car must park at the end of the route, respecting all parking restrictions. The destination is usually the city center.
A perfect opportunity to demonstrate the efficiency of cycling and attract media attention!
