Training objectives

The Mountain Bike Instructor course is designed to develop the essential skills needed to lead a group of trail riders. At the end of this training, you will be equipped to :

  • Define the role and limits of mountain bike coaching.
  • Understand your legal and moral responsibilities.
  • Identify, analyze and mitigate exit risks.
  • Apply the principles of risk management, emergency response and injury prevention.
  • Transmit the rules of ethics and good conduct on the trails.
  • Prepare and guide an outing adapted to the group's level and objectives.
  • Select, check and adjust protective equipment.
  • Manage effort and energy during outings.

  • Characteristics and role of the mountain bike supervisor.
  • Risk management, emergency response and first-aid kit.
  • Safety and driving rules on the trails.
  • Checking the condition of bikes, equipment and clothing.
  • Planning and stages of a supervised outing.
  • Basic framing techniques and actions on the trail.
  • Knowledge of supervision ratios, isolation constraints and trail signs.

The course

The course is divided into two complementary parts:

Theoretical online training - 4h

Front be completed before the certificate is issued, This training is offered online only, so you can take it at your own pace. This module covers the basics of framing, risk management, equipment, ethics and more.

Attestation field trip - 3h

The field attestation component takes the form of a group outing and is the key step in validating your skills and obtaining the title of certified mountain bike instructor. More than just a simple outing, it's a formative and transformative experience in which you take on the role of participant and supervisor, in a real and dynamic context.

Supervised by a trainer certified to at least PMBIA Level 1, GSMBC L1 or with an NCCP trainer's license, this activity is offered in collaboration with two of Quebec's leading mountain bike schools: LVL UP MTB and Bikeskills, both of which guarantee excellence in mountain bike instruction. You will be evaluated on your preparation and ability to lead a safe and inclusive outing.

Possible statuses :

  • Trained supervisor after successful completion of online training.
  • Certified supervisor after successful completion of theoretical training and issue of attestation.
  • Official certification provided by Vélo Québec

Certification is valid for five (5) years. To renew your certification, Vélo Québec will contact you 6 to 8 weeks before the end of its validity to evaluate your knowledge, field experience and event organizer references.

Conditions of participation

  • Be at least 15 years old*.
  • Intermediate level mountain biker.
  • Have a suitable bike in good condition.
  • Carry a tool kit (puncture, chain, brakes, etc.).
  • Have a first-aid kit.

Please note that the following skills are also highly recommended for club, camp and trail network supervisors:

  • A valid certificate in general first aid and CPR/AED.
  • Proven experience in bicycle mechanics.

*Minor supervisors: It is strongly recommended that a minor supervisor be accompanied by a responsible adult to help manage the group, accidents and mechanical breakdowns.

Equipment required for certification

  • Certificate of successful completion of theoretical module
  • Functional mountain bike
  • Bike helmet
  • Tool and first-aid kit
  • Personal preparation (review of trail network, weather, etc.).

Pricing

  • 153,50 $ for Vélo Québec members
  • 179 $ for non-Vélo Québec members

Group registration possible.

Cancellation due to closure of the trail network (in the event of bad weather) or force majeure.

In the event of unfavorable weather conditions, the decision to cancel or postpone the outing will be made by 24 hours in advance by the trainer. You will then be contacted directly for further information.

The resumed outing will take place :

  • With LVL UL MTB: the pick-up date is agreed for the day after the chosen release date.
  • With Bikeskills: The trainer is responsible for arranging a later date.
