Montreal, Tuesday, May 31, 2022 - As part of the Go vélo Montréal Festival, presented by Producteurs de lait du Québec in collaboration with Desjardins, Vélo Québec is pleased to welcome Stein van Oosteren, author of the essay Why not ride a bike? and spokesperson for Collectif Vélo Île-de-France, as guest speaker. The conference will take place on Thursday, June 2, 2022, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Maison du développement durable (limited seating). It will also be offered in virtual format, via the Zoom platform. An inspiring lecture followed by a discussion and signing session with the author, not to be missed!
On the occasion of his And why the bike?, Stein Van Oosteren will explain how the bicycle is the key to the change needed in our urban environments, which have for too long been designed for and around the car. He will demonstrate that cycling is good for health, morale, children's autonomy, neighborhood life, the planet, and more. But for cycling to become the preferred transport option in the city of tomorrow, we need to bring it into the public debate, question elected municipal officials, combat preconceived ideas and challenge our lifestyles to meet the challenges of our time. The aim of this conference is to leave with a desire to change the city and a few ideas for action to kick-start this transition.
Thursday, June 2, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Free conference in French

About Stein van Oosteren
Stein van Oosteren, born in 1973, grew up in the Netherlands. After studying psychology and philosophy, he emigrated to Paris in 1996 to complete a thesis in philosophy. In 2002, he became deputy to the Dutch police attaché, before joining the Permanent Delegation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to UNESCO as diplomatic attaché in 2011. To make Fontenay-aux-Roses (where he lives, in the Paris suburbs) cycle-friendly, he founded the FARàVélo association in 2017 and, two years later, the Collectif Vélo Île-de-France (43 associations and 8,000 members), of which he is spokesman. Since 2018, Stein van Oosteren has been leading debates on cycling in France and abroad around the documentaries Why we cycle and Together we cycle, and signed the Why not ride a bike? published in Montreal by Écosociété.
