Municipal elections: the importance of developing a cycling culture

7 out of 10 Quebecers would like to see their municipality's cycling network improved and extended.1 On the eve of municipal elections, it's time to talk bikes and remind elected officials and municipal employees that they have a role to play in encouraging the development of a cycling culture among their citizens. Why should we do this?

Because pedaling generates numerous benefits for Quebec society. Cycling has a significant positive impact on people's physical and mental health, on the environment and even on the economy.

Pedaling is a simple solution to complex problems. It's a leisure activity, a physical activity, a sport, an excellent way to improve health, well-being and quality of life.

Cycling is also an active and sustainable means of transport. By integrating cycling into a regional transport offer, we can promote mobility, reduce traffic congestion and, by the same token, cut air pollution.

Pedaling also means supporting the Quebec economy. In The state of cycling in Quebec in 2020, The bicycle market is estimated to be worth $565 million a year. Cycling also increases personal disposable income. Obviously, using a bicycle costs less than using a car. When cycling makes it possible to avoid buying a vehicle, the sums that can be reallocated to other expenses represent an average of 11,000 $ according to CAA-Quebec.

A growing number of cyclists

Over the past twenty years, cycling has become increasingly popular. Whether to travel, have fun, get around or stay in shape, more than half of all Quebecers cycle!

Nearly 9 out of 10 children and teenagers ride bicycles in Quebec. This is a strong argument for ensuring a safe environment for our young cyclists. In fact, nearly 9 out of 10 Quebecers believe that the construction of bike lanes is an effective measure for ensuring cyclists' safety.1

For Vélo Québec, these figures speak for themselves, and the question is not whether or not we should invest in cycling facilities, but rather how we can better develop them to meet the needs of citizens and encourage them to cycle.

And how can municipalities encourage cycling?

Municipalities can build a VELOSYMPATHIC community and play a proactive role in creating an environment conducive to cycling for all. They have the power to develop safe facilities that meet the needs of cyclists of all ages and an extensive, continuous network of bike lanes.

They can focus on education and set up programs to ensure cyclists' safety, for example, by promoting active transportation in schools, cycling education and road-sharing awareness.

They can encourage cycling by participating in promotional campaigns, organizing popular bike rides or offering self-service bicycles. These are simple, effective ways of encouraging people to get on their bikes, and enabling newcomers to try them out and make them part of their daily lives.

To all citizens, candidates, municipal councillors, mayors and mayoresses: it's time to develop a genuine cycling culture in your municipality and contribute to our collective well-being. You can develop a modern living environment that values active mobility, physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits, characteristics that are increasingly sought after by families and citizens alike.
