Some highlights on commuting by bicycle

The most recent 2016 census data on the mode of transportation used for commuting show this:

-Bicycle use is growing faster than all other modes of transport. In Canadian cities with populations of 100,000 or more, the number of bicycle trips has increased by 88% since 1996, while the total number of trips has increased by 36%.

-In Montreal, the modal share of bicycle commuting continues to grow. It is now :

  • 2.0% for metropolitan France (vs. 1.7% in 2011)
  • 3.6% on the Island of Montreal (vs. 2.9% in 2011)
  • 3.9% in the City of Montreal (vs. 3.2% in 2011)

-There were around 31,000 bike commuters on the Island of Montreal in 2016, 6,000 more than in 2011.

-At 2.3%, Greater Vancouver's bicycle modal share is slightly higher than that of Greater Montreal.

-In Vancouver City, the modal share of cycling rose from 4.4%, in 2011, to 6.1% in 2016. Note: the City Vancouver contains only 1/4 of its metropolitan population and is not geographically comparable to the City of Montreal.
