Why support Vélo Québec

Since 1967, Vélo Québec has been actively promoting the many benefits of cycling, not only as a leisure activity, but also as a real transportation option that has a positive impact on the environment, health and well-being.

With your support, we're bringing the voice of cyclists to...
Recognizing the true value of bicycles

In 2020, despite the headwinds caused by the pandemic, Vélo Québec convinced the government to recognize bicycle repair and sales as essential services, developed a Cyclists' code of conduct in times of pandemic and produces the Practical guide: Measurements for cyclists and pedestrians and the Manager's guide cycling networks and mountain bike infrastructure in the context of COVID-19.

Educating young people

Since 2015, more than 8,000 young Quebecers have participated in Cycliste averti, our learn-to-bike program for primary school children, designed to enable them to travel safely and independently.

In 2020, Vélo Québec adapted Cycliste averti so that it could be offered in day camps and published a guide to the draisienne method of learning to ride a bike. In addition, on its own initiative and in collaboration with the Borough of Plateau-Mont-Royal, Vélo Québec has set up a first bicycle education park in Montreal.

Turning the corner on sustainable mobility

Through its programs for schools, organizations and municipalities, such as the VELOSYMPATHIC movement or publicity campaigns such as Become a cyclotoute, Bike Month, Winter cycling, Bike to work, Vélo Québec is working to make cycling a real transportation and leisure option for everyone.

Improving cycling facilities and safety

Vélo Québec works actively to ensure quality facilities and infrastructure. Concrete achievements? Paving the shoulders of Quebec's rural roads has become the norm, as have integrating bike lanes when building new bridges or viaducts, or adding them to older infrastructures.

For 25 years, Vélo Québec has been prime contractor for the Route verte, the largest cycling route in North America, with 5300 km linking all regions of Quebec. It's a national jewel, used as much by bicycle tourists and excursionists as by citizens who choose active transportation for their daily commute. Vélo Québec also participates in the development of tourist accommodations adapted to cyclists, thanks to its certification. Bienvenue cyclistes!.

In addition, to share its knowledge and expertise, Vélo Québec publishes numerous guides and studies for Quebec municipalities, so that they can make decisions in favor of cycling and equip their towns with quality facilities and infrastructure.

Defending the interests of all cyclists

For Vélo Québec, participating in public consultations, offer concrete actions - safe cycling facilities, regulatory innovations, etc. - and carry out performances with the various levels of government are part of our daily routine.

Over the years, our demands have led to a number of gains for cyclists: a minimum distance in the Highway Safety Code (HSC) for passing a cyclist by a vehicle; abolition of the loss of points on a driver's licence for an HSC offence committed on a bicycle; authorization to use a pedestrian light when cycling, to name but a few.

Encouraging cycling in all its forms

Organizing and encouraging participation in major cycling events means bringing cycling to a large number of people. Every year, Vélo Québec organizes major cycling events - including the Tour de l’Île de Montréal and One Tour la Nuit - allowing young and old alike to celebrate the pleasure of cycling.

Vélo Québec also promotes mountain biking and fatbike by broadcasting a trail directory, by offering development grants and publishing practice development guides.

Vélo Québec operates a travel agency offering a wide range of destinations in Quebec - including the popular Vélo Québec events. Petite Aventure and the Grand Tour - and around the world, offering Quebec cyclists cycling trips that respect the environment and the communities they visit. The profits generated by our agency are used to finance our primary mission: to develop and promote cycling in Quebec.
