In 2025, the Route verte turns thirty. This unique cycling infrastructure stretches over 5,000 kilometers across Quebec. It connects villages, towns and regions, while revitalizing abandoned railway lines, redeveloping rural crossings and structuring a new soft mobility offer. Along the way, it has contributed to the revitalization of numerous localities and the creation of a veritable art of bicycle travel.

Jean-François Pronovost was one of the main architects of this project, from the first concept in 1995 to its official inauguration in 2007. Route verte-La plus belle conquête du vélo retraces the stages of this collective achievement: the political decisions, the compromises, the local impetus, the resistance, the solutions invented along the way. It also tells the story of how an idea born in civil society was gradually taken up by all public players, as mandates and regions changed.

A story rooted in the region, nourished by anecdotes and encounters, it bears witness to the way in which a human-scale initiative can, through collective support, become a national project.
