The new reference: «Designing for pedestrians and cyclists».»

The reality of active travel has changed dramatically in recent years. The cycling season is getting longer, and more and more of us are cycling for twelve months at a time. This reality is directly linked to the creation of favorable environments and quality cycling infrastructures. And in this area, too, things have come a long way. Unprotected two-way cycle lanes that lead nowhere are now a rarity, and all the better for it! One-way lanes are gradually appearing, and the concepts of shared streets and bike lanes are even part of the latest version of the Highway Safety Code.

Vélo Québec works on two fronts to promote the importance of quality bicycle facilities. First, by making the case to various levels of government for the importance of investing in such facilities. Secondly, by developing the technical tools that enable professionals and technicians to fully understand the needs of pedestrians and cyclists, and to design and build the most effective facilities. In a few days' time, we'll be publishing our fifth technical book on the subject, the first having been published in 1990. A new, revised and expanded edition, new concepts and a new title: Providing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

This document will become the new reference for professionals in the fields of mobility, roads, planning and leisure, and will also be of great interest to elected representatives and civic associations promoting active mobility. It will show a new way of looking at streets, roads and urban spaces, from the cyclist's point of view, of course, but also from the perspective of more harmonious cohabitation with pedestrians, young and old, as well as people with disabilities.

Knowing the passion and energy our team has put into writing this manual, I have no hesitation in telling you that it is a high-quality achievement.

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a merry holiday season on bikes, skis or snowshoes. In short, let's all go out and play!
